The AIA CAD Layer Guidelines defines layer naming strategies used throughout Digital Drawing for Designers. Discipline designators are the first letter used in each layer name. Major groups are four-character abbreviations that identify major building systems. Computer-Aided Design (CAD) is an accepted tool for producing the documentation required for construction and management of facilities; it also provides for a common medium of information exchange. In fact, the true power and potential of CAD is the ability to re-use and share the information contained within the CAD document.
The PP&C CAD Layering Guidelines are based upon the AIA National CAD Standards, and are designed to make our CAD files more accessible to users and consultants. Layer names are created using a pattern based upon the discipline and content of an individual layer. This structure makes the list easier to use and accommodates future expansion. States National CAD Standard. More detailed topics such as layer guidelines also refer to the AIA standards. Known as AIA CAD Layer Guidelines: U.S. National CAD Standard - Version Subsequent editions of the NCS adopted the same nomenclature.
The layer name format is organized as a hierarchy. This arrangement allows users to select from a number of options for naming layers according to the level of detailed information Size: KB. As a CAD instructor and design professional I've been using the Master CAD Layer Guidelines since I find it to be a very effective tool for teaching beginning and intermediate CAD users the proper way to use layers for industry.
In that regard it is invaluable. However, I am embarrassed by the exorbitant cost of the publication.4/4(1). AIA CAD Layer Guidelines These guidelines discuss layer name format, and provide exhaustive layer lists for over twenty types of layers. The Layer module includes new layers for distributed energy, real estate, survey/mapping, architectural, structural, architectural, fire protection, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and telecommunications.

A layer in cad is a way to differentiate between the different lines that are drawn on a page. The layer can be assigned properties such as linewieght, line type and colour and can be made visible or hidden, amongst other things.
You can use layers in a drawing for. AIA CAD Layer Guidelines, version 2, was designed and formatted to match its companion document, CSI's Uniform Drawing System.
It was also carefully coordinated with that document, so that the two function as a whole. Additions and improvements to version 2 of AIA CAD Layer Guidelines. Expanded and reorganized CAD Layer Guidelines that make locating layer names easier. The "telecommunications discipline" layer name includes new items, many of which were moved from the "electrical discipline" layer.
An updated Uniform Drawing System with new and revised symbols for geotech, security, fire suppression, masonry, and plaster. modify the layers so that they can be stored as part of a consistent format. See “Record Drawing Files” in this document, and Appendix B, University CAD Layering System.
1 Copies of the CAD Layer Guidelines are available through the American Institute of Architects Press, New York Avenue NW, Washington, D.C., The layer standards have their own set of documents, including a Microsoft Excel file with the layering guidelines and a PDF describing how the standards work.
The standards basically consist of a discipline indicator, a major and minor group (or two) and followed by a status or phase. These CAD Standards are an adaptation of mainstream industry conventions as assembled in the. National CAD Standard.
The NCS specification consists of three well-known standards subcomponents that have been in circulation for quite some time: American Institute of Architects - CAD Layer Guidelines. The Denver Service Center uses, in general, the AIA CAD Layer Guidelines.
The AIA CAD Layer Guidelines give two methods for sharing graphic information. The single file approach, in which drawings are created by turning layers on and off, is not to be used on DSC drawings.
The second method, used on DSC drawings, is the multiple file approach. CAD & BIM Standards Introduction This manual is a guide for consultant s performing, or desiring to perform, engineering design and/or drafting services for the Port of Portland.
